IS THERE HOPE FOR the FUTURE?

Picture1"Evil will slay the wicked…" Psalm 34:21

Are we as Christians doomed to defeat on earth – or are we destined for victory?
Does your understanding of the future inspire you to positive prayer and action?
Or are you being paralysed into inactivity by an eschatology of escapism?
Is your faith being strengthened by the victorious vision of the Bible?
Or have you been neutralised by a defeatist view of the end times?
Do you long to see the Church revived and faithfully "making disciples of all nations"?
Or do you long to be removed from your responsibilities here on earth?
Is the fulfilment of our Lord's Great Commission your supreme ambition?
Or is your main obsession to be raptured from your responsibilities here on earth?

Paralysed by Pessimism

Many Christians seem to have succumbed to a negative and defeatist view of the future. We are living in the last days! These are signs of the end! Paralysed by pessimism, many passive pew warmers are praying for the rapture to rescue them out of their responsibilities. Yet, if we were to rightly divide the Word of Truth and correctly understand the signs of the times, we would return to the fight of Faith with renewed vigour and a revitalised vision.

Humanism is Self-destructive

The clash in the Western world today is between those who hold to a God centred, Bible-based worldview and those who advocate a man centred humanist worldview. If a group of people had actually planned how to most effectively destroy a society, they could hardly have done a more effective, or rather destructive, job than what the humanists have done. Every item on the secular humanist agenda is self-destructive: “Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life.” Galatians 6:7-8

Meaninglessness

By promoting the theory of evolution, humanists are promoting a senseless existence in a chance universe: “You came from nothing. You are going nowhere. Life is meaningless!” “They sow the wind and reap the whirlwind…” Hosea 8:7

20142F062F102F4a2Fpride1.7b5e6War Against the Family

By legalising pornography and promoting permissiveness and perversion, humanists are undermining the essential foundation of society – the family. The exploitative industry of pornography (and the assorted sexually orientated businesses which flourish and fester around it) grows only at the expense of the general well-being of society, as a whole. Pornography undermines the economy by wasting vast amounts of time, money, energy and productivity. It also erodes the essential foundation for any sound economy – the family. By glamourising adultery and encouraging promiscuity, pornography has played a key role in the break-up of many families. As family men make up the overwhelming majority of law-abiding, hardworking, tax paying, stable and productive citizens, it is economic suicide for any society to tolerate the spread of pornography or perversion. “You have plowed wickedness; you have reaped iniquity. You have eaten the fruit of lies, because you trusted in your own way…” Hosea 10:13

Health Hazard

Pornography is also a health issue. The flood of sexually exploitative magazines and videos which have been allowed to swamp South Africa has greatly aggravated the health crisis. By stimulating sexual promiscuity, pornography has had the effect of greatly accelerating the spread of sexually transmitted diseases (STD’s) including HIV/AIDS. If the Ministry of Health is really serious about combating the spread of AIDS, then it should do all in its power to persuade the Ministry of Home Affairs to ban pornography and shut down the disease factories (sex shops, “escort” agencies and “massage parlours”). “Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries and the like… those who practice such things will not inherit the Kingdom of God.” Galatians 5:19-21

Impoverishing the Poor

Those who believe that legalised gambling benefits the economy are woefully ill-informed. Gambling does not generate any real growth as it simply recirculates existing money. Like pornography, the gambling industry is parasitic. It drains the income of citizens who would normally spend the same money on food, clothing, home improvements, education and entertainment for his family. “Woe to the wicked! It shall be ill with him…” Isaiah 3:11

Worshipping Chance

It is a researched fact that the poor, disadvantaged socio-economic groups gamble disproportionately more of their income. The burden of lottery spending, for example, hits the poor eight times harder than the rich. The chances of winning a lottery are so cruelly weighed against the desperate poor that lottery is in effect theft by consent (The odds of winning the average lottery is 1 in 5 million. You are 5 x more likely to be struck by lightning than win the lottery!). “Getting treasures by a lying tongue is the fleeting fantasy of those who seek death.” Proverbs 21:6

Extortion

Yet, governments often legalise this blatant extortionist industry built upon greed because of the revenue (taxes) it can accrue. However, this always proves to be a most short sighted and irresponsible decision. There are volumes of exhaustive and conclusive evidences proving that: with legalised gambling comes a frightening increase in alcoholism, bankruptcies, wife battering, child abuse, divorces, bribery, fraud, theft, extortion, suicides and murders. The cost of gambling in terms of ruined lives, broken families, bankrupt individuals and businesses, increased crime and human suffering is so great - and the resultant increasing strain on the economy, police, judiciary, prisons and welfare agencies is so severe that no informed and principled government should ever legalise such an extortionist, parasitic industry. Yet it is as though secular humanists have a death wish! Socialism is legalised theft and institutionalised envy. “Woe to those who devise iniquity and work out evil…” Micah 2:1

Economics

Time and again secular humanists trot out tired superficial arguments in support of failed policies, such as in their promotion of the unworkable wastage of welfare and socialism. Instead of feeding the poor, socialism has consistently proven that its clumsy, top-heavy, inefficient system is only adept at feeding the bloated, bureaucratic structures they set up to administer the economy, as they punish the productive and reward the parasites. “Woe to him who builds his house by unrighteousness and his chambers by injustice, who uses his neighbour’s service without wages and gives him nothing for his work.” Jeremiah 22:13

Abortion

By campaigning for abortion, the “pro-choicers” are destroying their own descendants. They are in effect aborting their futures. Abortion is an economic disaster which deprives the economy of the productivity, wage earning, tax paying contributions of each life ended. In America it is calculated that each abortion costs the economy $1.5 million in terms of the goods and services the average citizen would generate in their lifetime. In terms of economics, abortion kills long term growth as seen in Europe needing migrant workers. “Their feet run to evil and they make haste to shed innocent blood; their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity; wasting and destruction are in their paths.” Isaiah 59:7

Education

By working to replace Bible education with sex education in government schools, humanists are sowing seeds of social suicide. By removing the essential foundation for producing young adults unselfishly devoted to duty and integrity, humanists are making rods for their own backs. Children raised on evolutionism, situation ethics, moral relativism, horror toys, occultic TV, video games and pornography tend to grow up into rebellious, lawless and selfish adults. Whereas Bible education has inspired many who sacrificially serve others: providing medicine, literacy and the Gospel to desperately needy people in adverse conditions - humanist education has all too often led to selfish abuse of others. “The heart of him who has understanding seeks knowledge, but the mouth of fools feeds on foolishness.” Proverbs 15:14

Humanists regard criminals as “victims of society” who require “treatment” and “rehabilitation” - rather than punishment and deterrent. In so doing, humanist law makers have in effect punished society as a whole. Many of us can remember when we lived without burglar bars, security gates, high walls, razor wire, armed response security companies, immobilisers, steering locks and heavy bunches of keys. That was when murderers were executed and criminals were behind bars. Now murderers are constitutionally protected from execution (but babies in the womb are not) and it is law abiding citizens who are locked behind bars in our own homes. Dangerous, career criminals, are freely roaming the streets, if they are not in Parliament that is. “…For the wicked surround the righteous; therefore perverse judgment proceeds.” Habakkuk 1:4

The Bitter Harvest

The inevitable results of rejecting God’s eternal Law are written all over the pages of history and our local newspapers: the crime explosion, the pornography plague, increasing rape and child abuse, higher taxes, escalating inflation, rising unemployment, the breakup of marriages, the breakdown of society, sexually transmitted diseases and the AIDS epidemic. “The fool has said in his heart, ‘There is no God.’ They are corrupt. They have done abominable works. There is none who does good.” Psalm 14:1

Death, Destruction and Devastation

Even more terrible have been the vicious massacres perpetrated by secular humanists such as Robespierre, Lenin, Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot, Mengistu and many others and the abortion holocaust promoted by the humanist founder of Planned Parenthood, Margaret Sanger. “Their throat is an open tomb; with their tongues they have practiced deceit… Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness. Their feet are swift to shed blood; destruction and misery are in their ways; and the way of peace they have not known. There is no fear of God before their eyes.” Romans 3:13-18

Atheism Vs Christianity

By way of contrast, while Atheism offers no God, no future and no hope, obedience to the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ offers purpose, meaning and hope - both now and for eternity. Those who live unselfish, moral and disciplined lives, remaining faithful to their marriage partner, will have the best chance of surviving STDs and the AIDS plague. Those who work hard, save wisely and spend their money carefully, will be blessed with financial security. Biblical free enterprise produces wealth and rewards hard work and ingenuity. Those who invest their lives in bringing up God fearing children, ensuring that they receive Bible based education, will build the future.

For these and many other reasons, we should not be discouraged by the prevalence of evil today. “Evil will slay the wicked…” Psalm 34:2

Doomed to Defeat

Humanism carries within it the seeds of its own destruction. “They did not keep the covenant of God; they refused to walk in His Law.” Psalm 78:10

God alone is all powerful, all knowing and everywhere present. He is sovereign over the affairs of men. The enemies of God are destined for defeat. “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness.” Romans 1:18

Victory is Certain

God is all-powerful, all knowing and everywhere present. He is sovereign over all nations. History is His-story. God has not predestined defeat for His people. The ultimate victory of the Kingdom of God is inevitable. Christians are not doomed to defeat, we are called to conquest. Therefore, Christians need to diligently lay foundations for the future. The fight for faith and freedom will inevitably be won - but if we want to be part of what God is doing, we need to invest in literature and leadership training for the next generation. May God find us faithful.

"Ask of Me and I will make the nations your inheritance, the ends of the earth your possession. You will rule them with an iron sceptre; you will dash them to pieces like pottery. Therefore, you kings, be wise; be warned you rulers of the earth. Serve the Lord with fear…" Psalm 2:8-11

"All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the Lord and all the families of the nations will bow down before Him, for dominion belongs to the Lord and He rules over the nations." Psalm 22:27-28

"In His days the righteous shall flourish…. He shall have dominion also from sea to sea and from the river to the ends of the earth. Those who dwell in the wilderness will bow before Him and His enemies will lick the dust… Yes, all kings shall fall down before Him, all nations shall serve Him… All nations shall call Him blessed… let the whole earth be filled with His glory. Amen and Amen." Psalm 72:7-19

Jesus Shall Reign

In the immortal words of Isaac Watts' hymn published in 1719 (based on Psalm 72):
"Jesus shall reign where'er the sun
Doth his successive journey run;
His Kingdom stretch from shore to shore,
Till moons shall wax and wane no more"

The Great Commission

In these and so many other Psalms, it is made clear that the Great Commission of our Lord Jesus Christ will be fulfilled. All the families of all the nations will bow down before Christ and He will rule the nations. Because of these Scriptural prophesies we can have every confidence that the Great Commission will be fulfilled – that all kings will bow down to Christ and all nations will serve Him. We are neither working at uncertainty nor afraid of the result. God's cause will triumph!

Messiah

In that famous verse so often quoted at Christmas time: "For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given and the Government will be upon His shoulder… of the increase of His Government and peace there will be no end." Isaiah 9:6-7. In Handel's Messiah, that verse is so powerfully pounded out and emphasised.

Standing for the Anthem of the King of Kings

When Messiah was performed in London, March 1743, King George II attended and when he stood at the opening notes of the Hallelujah Chorus, he began a tradition that has been carried on in the English-speaking world ever since. When Queen Victoria attended Handel's Messiah, she stood and bowed - to show that Jesus Christ is the King above all kings.

The Vision of Daniel

The prophet Daniel was given a tremendous vision and insight to world history. He saw a statue with a head of gold, the chest of silver, the stomach of bronze, the legs of iron and the feet of iron and clay. This symbolised the various empires and kingdoms of the world. He saw a Rock come and smash the entire statue – the iron, clay, bronze, silver and gold, to pieces. This Stone, which the builders rejected as worthless, grew to be a Mountain that filled the whole earth. "And in the days of these kings the God of Heaven will set up a Kingdom which shall never be destroyed; and the Kingdom shall not be left to other people; it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms and it shall stand forever." Daniel 2:44

The Statue and the Stone

In Lubyanka Square, in Moscow, about 900m North East of Red Square, a huge statue of Felix Dzerzhinsky, the founder of the Cheka, which later became the KGB, was erected in 1958. This statue was directly in front of the Lubyanka, the notorious Headquarters of the KGB, wherein many Christians were interrogated, tortured and murdered. In 1991, the statue of Dzerzhinsky was removed and a simple stone from the Solovki Monastery from Solovetski Island, which had been the first prototype Communist Concentration Camp of the Soviet Union, was placed in the square where the statue of Dzerzhinsky had once stood. The symbolism of the Victory of Christ over Communism is striking. "And whoever falls on this Stone will be broken; but on whomever it falls, it will grind him to powder." Matthew 21:44

Everlasting Dominion

Daniel saw clearly that Messiah "was given dominion and glory and a Kingdom that all peoples, nations and languages should serve Him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away and His Kingdom the one which shall not be destroyed." Daniel 7:14. Even more than this, Daniel prophesied of the day when: "Then the kingdom and dominion and the greatness of the kingdoms under the whole heaven, shall be given to the people, the saints of the Most High. His Kingdom is an everlasting Kingdom and all dominions shall serve and obey Him." Daniel 7:27

This is confirmed through the prophets: "For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea." Habakkuk 2:14

"The Lord will be awesome to them, for He will reduce to nothing all the gods of the earth; people shall worship Him, each one from his place, indeed all the shores of the nations." Zephaniah 2:11

"And the Lord shall be King over all the earth. In that day it shall be - 'The Lord is One,' and His Name One." Zechariah 14:9

Hope for the Future

Is there hope for the future? Absolutely. Almighty God is sovereign. Those who wage war against God will inevitably fail. He has granted us the keys of the Kingdom. What we bind on earth will be bound. What we loose will be loosed. The Gospel is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes (Romans 1:16). We are more than conquerors through Christ Jesus Who loves us (Romans 8:37). Greater is Him Who is in us than he who is in the world (1 John 4:4). We can do all things through Christ Who strengthens us (Philippians 4:13).

Priority and Purpose

This is what the Great Commission calls us to: "All authority has been given to Me in Heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations… teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you…" Matthew 28:18-19. Christ's last command must be our first concern. The Great Commission must be our supreme ambition. This is what it means to pray the Lord's Prayer: "Your will be done on earth as it is in Heaven." Matthew 6:10. The main thing is to keep the main thing, the main thing. Seek first the Kingdom of God (Matthew 6:33).

"…The kingdoms of this world have become the Kingdoms of our Lord and of His Christ and He shall reign forever and ever!" Revelation 11:15
